But on some reefs, a less healthy sound can be heard: the rumble of explosions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Blast fishing is the practice of tossing bombs into the sea. It kills or stuns everything in its vicinity and often destroys the reef structures that support these rich ecosystems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Spermonde archipelago, off the south-western edge of Indonesia\u2019s Sulawesi island, is a known hotspot for the destructive practice. But its prevalence has been hard to gauge, until now. An international team has tracked this blast fishing via thousands of hours of ambient sound, all captured by a single underwater audio recorder. The scientists detected thousands of explosions in this data, a process made much quicker thanks to machine learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe know bomb fishing has been an issue in this archipelago and many others around the world,\u201d says the study\u2019s leader Ben Williams, a marine biologist turned AI scientist working with Imperial College London and the Zoological Society of London, United Kingdom. \u201cBut the challenge has been, we don\u2019t really know to what extent it goes on. It could be a few bombs get dropped a month, it could be hundreds. This is the first time we\u2019ve got real tangible counts of this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cd-map-embed block--map-embed\"><div class=\"block--map-embed__column\"><div class=\"block--map-embed__embed aspect-ratio--16-9\"><iframe src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/1218069207?badge=0&amp;autopause=0&amp;player_id=0&amp;app_id=58479\"><\/iframe><\/div><div class=\"block--map-embed__content\"><div itemprop=\"caption\" class=\"block--map-embed__caption\">A healthy coral reef is alive with the sounds of all the different creatures that call it home (Video: Biopixel; Audio: Tim Lamont)<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-one-of-the-most-destructive-fishing-practices-on-earth\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">One of the most destructive fishing practices on Earth<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Central and eastern Indonesia lie within the coral triangle, and its reefs are among the planet\u2019s most ecologically diverse places. The reefs provide coastal communities with food security, jobs in fishing and tourism, and act as a buffer against storm waters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Blast fishing threatens all of this. Homemade explosives \u2013 often fertiliser packed into bottles \u2013 are thrown overboard. The blast waves rupture the internal organs of fish, which float to the surface and can easily be scooped into nets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A typical bottle bomb can kill or stun almost everything within a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0025326X17307713?via%3Dihub\">10-30&nbsp;metre<\/a> radius, according to studies. The pressure waves from explosions can reduce the complex, warren-like structures of slow-growing coral, a habitat for many species, to rubble. This destruction makes it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0141113625005367?via%3Dihub\">very hard<\/a> for coral to resettle: juvenile corals need a relatively stable base and they can be damaged or buried when loose rubble is moved by waves and tides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSites that have been bombed 40-50 years ago are still rubble beds,\u201d says Tries Razak, a marine scientist at IPB University in Indonesia, and co-author of the new research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cd-map-embed block--map-embed\"><div class=\"block--map-embed__column\"><div class=\"block--map-embed__embed aspect-ratio--16-9\"><iframe src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/1218069204?badge=0&amp;autopause=0&amp;player_id=0&amp;app_id=58479\"><\/iframe><\/div><div class=\"block--map-embed__content\"><div itemprop=\"caption\" class=\"block--map-embed__caption\">Blast fishing can leave reefs destroyed for decades \u2013 the rubble left behind is devoid of the rich biodiversity that was once supported (Image and audio: Tim Lamont)<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even among Indonesia\u2019s thousands of islands, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/journals\/marine-science\/articles\/10.3389\/fmars.2017.00145\/full\">Spermonde<\/a> archipelago is often considered especially biodiverse. Local waters host <a href=\"https:\/\/d1wqtxts1xzle7.cloudfront.net\/67911906\/2021_S_Yusuf_Coral_Biodiversity_in_Spermonde-libre.pdf\">hundreds<\/a> of species of coral and sponges. They teem with so many fish that they support one of the largest coral reef fisheries in Indonesia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Satellite monitoring of the Spermonde archipelago reveals that approximately <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/01431161.2023.2268823\">76%<\/a> of its live coral was lost between 1990 and 2022. Blast fishing was a key contributor. One study from the 1990s suggests that <a href=\"https:\/\/digitalarchive.worldfishcenter.org\/server\/api\/core\/bitstreams\/32464a3d-d6af-428d-8530-ce4051a1bc84\/content\">10-40%<\/a> of the fish in a market in the capital city of South Sulawesi province, Makassar (then Ujung Pandang), was caught through blasting. The practice can be identified by characteristic damage to the skeletons, skin and eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-a-needle-in-a-haystack-that-keeps-moving\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">A needle in a haystack that keeps moving<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Blast fishing has been practised for decades and documented in at least <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0006320721003591?via%3Dihub\">31 countries<\/a>. In Indonesia, NGOs including Destructive Fishing Watch Indonesia are <a href=\"https:\/\/dfw.or.id\/english-page\/\">pushing<\/a> against blast fishing through coastal programmes and advocacy work, and it has been illegal since 1985. Outwardly, the authorities take a hard line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last year, Indonesia\u2019s national police conducted a <a href=\"https:\/\/inp.polri.go.id\/artikel\/inp-uncover-72-destructive-fishing-cases-prevent-rp-49-billion-in-losses#main\">campaign<\/a> that uncovered 72 cases of destructive fishing practices, including blasting, poisoning and electrocution. Police say they arrested 101 suspects and prevented IDR 49 billion (USD 2.7 million) in state losses. The reality is that blast fishing happens at scale, monitoring and enforcement is patchy and catching the odd rogue fisher is a drop in the ocean, say experts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Indonesia\u2019s ocean is actively patrolled by police and other authorities who arrest blast fishers on a regular basis. But the country\u2019s huge ocean area makes chance encounters with active bomb fishers unlikely, and <a href=\"https:\/\/etd.ohiolink.edu\/acprod\/odb_etd\/ws\/send_file\/send?accession=ohiou1213299684&amp;disposition=inline\">past research<\/a> has suggested bribery of officials and rapid disposal of evidence as patrols approach is common. Sometimes, blast fishing is revealed when fishers <a href=\"https:\/\/news.mongabay.com\/2026\/07\/fatal-wwii-bomb-blast-in-indonesia-was-a-result-of-illegal-fishing-activity-police-say\/\">die<\/a> in accidents while working with explosives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even when culprits are known, without clear evidence such as possession of explosives or catching them in the act, it is virtually impossible to prosecute. And tracking those using the method over vast swaths of the western Pacific is incredibly challenging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-filling-the-blast-fishing-data-gap\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Filling the blast fishing data gap<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/zslpublications.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1002\/rse2.70093\">work led by Ben Williams<\/a>, with his collaborators in the UK and Indonesia, addresses this challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The team placed an audio recorder, capable of detecting blast fishing within a 17 km radius, near the south-west coast of Sulawesi. Next, an open-source machine-learning algorithm was used to whittle down each month of audio data to just a few hours for human review. Similar approaches have been used in tropical forests to <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.ecolind.2022.109128\">detect poachers<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cd-map-embed block--map-embed\"><div class=\"block--map-embed__column\"><div class=\"block--map-embed__embed aspect-ratio--16-9\"><iframe src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/1218069205?badge=0&amp;autopause=0&amp;player_id=0&amp;app_id=58479\"><\/iframe><\/div><div class=\"block--map-embed__content\"><div itemprop=\"caption\" class=\"block--map-embed__caption\">Researchers placed an audio recorder like this one on a reef in the Spermonde archipelago, located off the south-west coast of Sulawesi. For instance, Williams says the team had to spend extra time analysing one set of data when an especially vocal choir of fish passed through. They also had to deal with a few data gaps when the recorder was taken by spear fishers, which happened more than once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over a 16-month period, they verified more than 3,500 blasts. But the recording was not continuous, so the team have calculated that these figures equate to almost 8,500 blasts per year. This is likely to be causing as much as 160,000 square metres of reef degradation annually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<a class=\"wp-block-cd-related-news alignright block--related-news loading\" data-post-id=\"40093571\"><div class=\"block--related-news__image\"><\/div><div class=\"block--related-news__content\"><span class=\"block--related-news__heading\">Recommended<\/span><span class=\"block--related-news__title\"><\/span><\/div><\/a>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bombing occurred year-round, mostly in daylight, with significant reductions during storms and on Fridays \u2013 the local day of prayer. This is only the second study with verifiable methods to track the frequency of blast fishing, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0025326X17307713\">following<\/a> a 2017 study in Tanzania. That study used a boat to survey 2,692&nbsp;km of transects (sample lines drawn across an area of ocean), recording 318 blasts in two months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s not the smoking gun, but it\u2019s strong evidence that bomb fishing is the primary cause of reef loss in this area,\u201d says Williams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-from-demo-to-real-world-tool\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">From demo to real-world tool<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Given its small scale, the new study is a proof of principle, rather than a finished solution: this was a single recorder covering a tiny fraction of the Spermonde archipelago, which sits on a shelf spanning 16,000 km2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To scale up and create a real-time monitoring system would require multiple recorders to triangulate the positions of individual blasts, and to coordinate with local patrols.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Enforcement systems similar to this have been deployed in Sabah, Malaysia. The initiative, a collaboration between the NGO Stop Fish Bombing (SFB) and the Malaysian authorities, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfbmy.org\/technology\">repurposed<\/a> acoustic gunshot detection technology by the US company SoundThinking. The scheme reduced blast fishing by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com.my\/news\/nation\/2023\/06\/10\/bomb-detection-devices-help-conservationists-curb-fish-bombing-in-semporna\">80%<\/a> over two years off the coast of the town of Semporna.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Terence Lim, SFB Malaysia\u2019s executive director, says authorities had previously dismissed the blast fishing as \u201csporadic\u201d. Things changed when they saw the data first-hand and heard recordings of blasts in their waters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lim says the mere presence of monitoring systems can make blast fishers think twice: \u201cIt\u2019s like a building. If you only fence it, someone will try to come in. But with 24\/7 CCTV, generally humans behave differently.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bombers, however, find ways to evade the reach of static audio recorders, such as hiding behind islands and other natural features. In response, SFB is developing a boat equipped with built-in audio sensors to enable mobile recording.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-open-source-and-scalable\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Open source and scalable<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the promising features of the study by Williams\u2019 team is the use of a <a href=\"https:\/\/zslpublications.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1002\/rse2.249\">new type<\/a> of underwater audio recorder. They cost USD 150 each and use free software that works on a standard laptop. Until recently, the predominant device for this type of study cost around USD 3,000, and blast fishing monitoring systems have often historically relied on private international funding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf we can build this system that is open source, and copy and replicate it, that would be very new. It would mean people are able to build on top of it and improve it over time,\u201d Williams tells Dialogue Earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Monitoring systems may be more economical than focusing on conservation after the damage is done. That requires an understanding of why people use the method.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Poverty is often cited as a cause, but that may be too simplistic according to some experts. Researchers behind a comprehensive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/354291048_A_review_of_the_current_global_status_of_blast_fishing_Causes_implications_and_solutions\">review<\/a> of blast fishing literature, published in 2021, concluded that insufficient governance and enforcement were the primary drivers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Melissa Hampton-Smith from James Cook University, Australia, was the lead author of the 2021 review: \u201cI don\u2019t think it is correct to say that, inevitably, when we have poverty, we will then have destructive fishing.\u201d She believes the best approach to long-term management is effective enforcement, combined with marine protected areas developed and run with local users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Tanzania, an enforcement campaign reduced blast fishing despite the precarity of livelihoods, she says. Community groups were given agency to coordinate with fishers, often through voluntary patrols, to preserve the marine environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-tackling-supply-chains\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tackling supply chains<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Terence Lim from Stop Blast Fishing says solutions should not be about demonising blast fishers, who are often stateless and vulnerable. Lim himself approaches blast fishers directly to inform them of his organisation\u2019s techniques for surveying the waters. \u201cIt\u2019s a psychological thing \u2013 even the fish bombers know it is wrong,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Lim, the deeper solution is to tackle the supply chains, including the detonators, which he says often come from the Philippines. In May, a boat containing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.malaymail.com\/news\/malaysia\/2026\/05\/04\/semporna-waters-drama-suspect-dives-into-sea-as-mmea-seizes-575kg-fertiliser-for-fish-bombs\/218740\">575 kg<\/a> of ammonia fertiliser was intercepted in waters near Semporna. Authorities said it was destined for fish bomb production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The other looming threat to reefs is climate change. Until recently, Indonesia\u2019s coral reefs have bounced back from bleaching events caused by marine heatwaves (when heat-stressed coral expel the symbiotic algae that give them their colour).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<a class=\"wp-block-cd-related-news alignright block--related-news loading\" data-post-id=\"40077212\"><div class=\"block--related-news__image\"><\/div><div class=\"block--related-news__content\"><span class=\"block--related-news__heading\">Recommended<\/span><span class=\"block--related-news__title\"><\/span><\/div><\/a>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But <a href=\"https:\/\/theconversation.com\/two-decades-of-research-show-indonesias-coral-reefs-are-heat-tolerant-but-only-up-to-a-point-281134\">research<\/a> led by IPB University\u2019s Tries Razak and published in June found that cumulative heat exposure eventually leads to an identifiable tipping point for coral. The study concludes that recent and projected increases in the frequency and intensity of marine heatwaves will ultimately accelerate die-offs \u2013 even among Indonesia\u2019s hardiest corals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn the olden days, bleaching events happened every few years. But it is happening now every single year, sometimes two times,\u201d Razak says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The healthier reefs are, the better their chances of surviving bleaching. For Razak, climate pressures make it even more important to protect vital reef systems from blast fishing while we still can.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Open-source
