Brian Lander is an Assistant Professor of History and Environment & Society at Brown University, where he teaches environmental history and studies the long-term transformation of China’s environments by human societies. In particular, he works on reconstructing the natural ecosystems that once existed in the core regions of Chinese civilization, tracing how people came to build their own agricultural ecosystems, and exploring the environmental consequences of the formation of states and empires.
