About

The Federal Land Development Authority (FELDA) was established in 1956 under the Land Development Ordinance (now Land Development Act) with the aim of resettling poor rural families on newly developed land to establish smallholdings for cash crop cultivation. FELDA's development model received recognition from the World Bank and United Nations for alleviating rural poverty in developing countries. In 2007, FELDA established the private corporate entity FGV Holdings to handle overseas investments across its agri-businesses including oil palm. Despite being one of the world's largest plantation operators, FGV Holdings has faced intense scrutiny from civil society groups over allegations of human rights violations and forced labour on its plantations. These allegations amounted to suspension from the RSPO in early 2020, and a Withhold Release Order (WRO) issued by the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) on its products. Of its 48,000 employees, an estimated 31,000 are migrant workers.
