Sulphur dioxide emissions increased by nearly 463,000 tonnes, 1.8% higher than the previous year, said Fan Yansheng, director of the pollution control department for China’s State Environmental Protection Administration (SEPA).
Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), a water pollution index, also increased by 173,000 tonnes.
China set a goal of reducing the emissions of major pollutants by 10% during the 11th Five-Year Plan period (2006-2010), and the government had sought to cut the two main pollutants by 2% in 2006.
