Earlier studies in the US have shown pollution from the exhaust of trucks, buses and coal-burning factories increases the risk of fatal heart attacks and strokes, the report said.
But until now, scientists did not understand why.
"We now know how the inflammation in the lungs caused by air pollutants leads to death from cardiovascular disease," Reuters quoted Gokhan Mutlu, a medical researcher at Northwestern University, as saying.
