Wal-Mart seeks emissions data

US retailer Wal-Mart is to ask its suppliers to measure and disclose their greenhouse-gas pollution, the Financial Times reported on Monday.

The corporation, one of the world’s largest by revenue, could eventually use the data to cut costs by comparing similar suppliers’ efficiency, the report said.

Wal-Mart will start with a pilot group of about 30 companies, with a view to rolling out the measurement and reporting to its 68,000 suppliers.

Reporting emissions in this manner will be the first stage towards curbing greenhouse-gas pollution, the report cited Paul Dickinson, chief executive of the Carbon Disclosure Project, a group of institutional investors that pioneered the scheme, as saying.
