Fuel ban sought after San Francisco spill

Bunker fuel, the sticky and polluting type of oil which last week spilled into the San Francisco Bay, is an ecological nightmare that should be banned, say environmentalists.

“Bunker fuel is the dirtiest fuel on the planet,” AP reported Teri Shore, campaign director for the marine program at Friends of the Earth, as saying.

The large container ship, the Cosco Busan, owned by Greek firm Synergy Maritime and chartered to South Korea’s Hanjin Group, left the Port of Oakland early on Wednesday and hit a fender around a support tower of the Bay Bridge on an especially foggy morning.

The oil has fouled more than 20 beaches and killed dozens of sea birds.
