Waterbirds added to UN threatened list

Twenty species of migratory waterbird have been added to the Agreement on the Conservation of African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbirds (AEWA), which gives the birds greater international protection in Africa, Europe and Asia.

The new list includes many species that are traditionally classified as "seabirds", such as tropicbirds, boobies, terns and frigatebirds.

Seabird populations are dwindling due to overfishing, pollution, invasive species, loss of habitat and climate change.
