Shenzhen this week launched an initiative to promote car charging using renewable power, reports Xinhua.
Eleven stations in the south-eastern city offer purely green electricity charging. Vehicle owners can obtain a trade-able Green Electricity Certificate for every 1,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of power they buy at these stations.
Guangzhou Daily predicts the initiative will lead to the consumption of over 14 million kWh of green electricity this year. That’s enough to drive about 70 million km in a typical EV.
National Business Daily commented that the programme will not only incentivise green power consumption but also boost trade in Green Electricity Certificates.
China is encouraging residents to consume renewable power through various measures. A high-level document issued in March of this year advised stakeholders to “promote green charging stations and support the use of green electricity by new energy vehicles.”
