Call for pitches: Green steel and industry decarbonisation

We are welcoming pitches from journalists for our expanded coverage of the steel industry and its decarbonisation challenge.

The steel industry must undergo a substantial transformation by 2050 to cut carbon emissions and meet climate targets. While this transition has started, it is also stalling, facing significant technological, policy and financial uncertainty. Our accessible journalism on industrial decarbonisation seeks to shine a light on the opportunities and first movers in this transition, as well as the challenges and barriers to its progress.

We are particularly welcoming of pitches covering developments in China, India, Brazil and South Africa, from new projects and policies, to the impacts of transitions and the inputs underpinning them. Given Dialogue Earth’s wider focus on the role of China as an actor in global environmental issues, we also welcome pitches on relevant Chinese projects, partnerships, trade and investments in iron and steel around the world. We are also open to pitches on international trends influencing steel decarbonisation, and tech innovations with the potential to support global green steelmaking.

Topics of interest

Powering the industry, supply and tech

• New/announced low-carbon steelmaking projects
• Reducing coal dependencies and scaling electrification
• Green hydrogen for steel decarbonisation
• Iron ore: mining, processing, international trade, and “green” iron ore development
• Technological innovations for decarbonisation
• Scrap use and recycling for steelmaking
• Carbon capture and storage in steelmaking, and scrutinising claims around this

Policy, demand and global trends

• New policy developments impacting industrial transitions
• Financing for steel and iron decarbonisation
• Creating markets, demand and procurement: downstream industries’ role in steel decarbonisation
• Global trade barriers, carbon markets and pricing impacts on countries’ steel decarbonisation, including CBAM
• International partnerships and projects supporting iron and steel decarbonisation

Who we commission

We are looking for journalists to help shine a light on these topics in a way that encourages healthy debate. We are looking for reporters who are skilled at writing about these subjects with nuance and sensitivity for a global audience, in a way that is compelling to both industry and non-specialist readers. We look for original story ideas and are unlikely to publish a story that has been covered extensively elsewhere, unless it offers a clear new angle or development.

We prioritise commissioning local journalists with proven experience in environmental journalism, and previous reporting relevant to the issues above. However, we also consider pitches from international journalists based in or covering our focus countries, and industry-focused journalists from around the world.

Format: In-depth news reports, features, analysis, and exclusive interviews

Length: ~1,200 words per article

Language: Pitches should be submitted in English; we are able to offer editorial support in Portuguese and Chinese, and consider articles written in these languages

Pitch deadline: Rolling, commissioning on a continuous basis

Fee: USD 540 per article

How to pitch

Please submit pitches to industry transition editor Patrick Moore; see our Pitch page for more information on what to include in your pitch. Pitches generated entirely using AI tools will be rejected.
