Established in 1929 through the merger of a Dutch margarine company and British soapmaking company. Both companies had previously revolutionised the use of palm oil in new manufacturing techniques at the turn of the 20th century. Today, Unilever is the single biggest handler of palm oil in the world (using around 1.3 million tonnes annually), with operations in over 100 countries, and selling popular branded products in over 150 countries. Unilever was a founding member of the RSPO and strives to conduct business with as much transparency as possible, publishing its list of supplying mills publicly each year.
