Pakistani politicians have a colourful arsenal of metaphors to describe the strength of their friendship with China: higher than the Himalayas, deeper than the oceans, stronger than steel, dearer than eyesight, sweeter than honey, and so on.

The US$46 billion (306 billion yuan) China Pakistan Economic Corridor was expected to cement these bonds and prove a “game changer” for the troubled region. But a year after launch the initiative is struggling with security concerns and pressure on scarce natural resources in the arid region.
