Sand is being plundered in huge quantities from rivers in Asia. As cities in the region expand, they will need tonnes of sand, gravel and boulders as building material. Experts say the extraction of this from rivers will be a colossal environmental disaster. But writing about and reporting on sand mining in Asia is also problematic: several journalists in India in recent years have been killed or silenced by threats for writing about sand mining.
