The study, produced by the World Bank in co-operation with Chinese government ministries over several years, initially found about 750,000 Chinese meet early deaths each year, mainly from air pollution in big cities, the Financial Times reported, citing officials as saying the information was "too sensitive" and "could cause misunderstanding."

The bank replied in a statement: "[A preliminary] version of the report did not include some of the issues that are still under discussion," the BBC reported on Tuesday.
