Endangered tigers ‘threatened’ by oil-palm plantations

Conservationists have issued a warning on the destruction of rare animal habitats, after Sumatran tigers, tapirs and other endangered animals were found to be living in parts of the Indonesian jungle given over to timber and oil-palm plantations.

British scientists found evidence of Sumatran tigers, families of elephants, sun bears, tapirs, golden cats and clouded leopards living in unprotected "degraded forest" on Sumatra.

Degraded forest has already been stripped of its largest trees, making it unsuitable for animals that live in forest canopies, but it is still a habitat for ground-based animals.
