Rising seas ‘threaten African coastline’

Africa's coastal infrastructure faces increasing danger of erosion from rising sea levels caused by climate change, Reuters reported the head of the UN Environment Programme as saying on Thursday.

Refineries and expensive private properties were already degrading as a result of climate change, Achim Steiner was quoted as saying.

"By some projections of the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change), global warming could affect one-third of Africa’s coastal infrastructure by the end of this century because we know that we are on a course of having sea levels rising between 20 and 60 centimetres this century," Steiner added.
