Annual emissions from the world’s merchant fleet, the report said, have already reached 1.12 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide, almost
4.5% of all global emissions of the climate-warming gas.
Carbon dioxide emissions from shipping, the report warns, may rise by a further 30% by 2020. Sulphur and soot emissions are expected to rise even faster over the same period.
Shipping is not taken into account by European targets for cutting global warming.
