The river, China’s third largest, stretches more than 1,000 kilometres
through Henan, Anhui, Jiangsu and Shandong provinces. However, the
report, by the country’s Ministry of Environmental Protection (MEP) —
formerly the State Environmental Protection Administration (SEPA),
found only Shandong had met targets on treating industrial waste.
The Huai was still "plagued with ammonia and nitrogen", the report
said. The chemical oxygen demand (COD), a measure of water pollution,
also was in excess of targets.
There are 191 urban waste water treatment plants along the river, the
report said, which together are able to purify about 2.7 billion
tonnes of waste every year. But according to Xinhua news agency, an
average of 4.4 billion tonnes of waste is discharged into the river
every year.
