Speaking at a ceremony marking the twentieth anniversary of the UN climate panel, Ban said countries negotiating a successor deal to the Kyoto Protocol should aim for a meaningful breakthrough in Poznan, Poland, in December.
It may be ill-advised to delay major advances until the end of 2009, when a summit in Copenhagen, Denmark, will aim to finalise an agreement on climate change, he said.
"We must fight the urge to postpone everything until Copenhagen. Surely we can make concrete progress on some issues," Ban said. "I would emphasise the need to make the most of the upcoming opportunity in Poznan," he added.
