The monkeys’ population in the high-altitude everglades of Guizhou province has risen to 850 from the original 400 reported in 1979, the report said.
This monkey, which is currently ranked above the panda as the country’s most endangered species, is threatened by poaching and loss
of habit due to logging and mining practices.
Breeding in captivity has generally proved unsuccessful, with only 16 births since 1992.
