Chu is a Chinese-American energy specialist and the director of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. He shared the 1997 Nobel Prize for physics for cooling and trapping atoms using laser light and is a leader in fighting climate change using scientific methods.
Obama will choose former head of the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, Lisa Jackson, to head the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Carol Browner, EPA chief under Bill Clinton, will serve as energy coordinator to facilitate energy, climate and environmental policy across a number of different government departments.
Obama has said that addressing climate issues will be one of his administration’s top priorities.
