“This year’s prize recipients have succeeded in combating some of the most important environmental challenges we face today,” said prize-founder Richard Goldman.

Tsetsegee Munkhbayar, 40, united herdsmen in Mongolia in a battle against rampant gold mining devastating the Onggi River. The effort is credited with getting the Mongolian Parliament to pass a law in 2006 regulating mining and protecting waterways.

Each prize comes with US$125,000 for winners to use as they wish.
