South China braces for first typhoon of year

Thousands of fishing boats have been called back into harbour as the southern Chinese provinces of Hainan and Guangdong brace themselves for typhoon Neoguri, which is expected to make landfall on Friday night or Saturday morning.

Around 21,800 fishing boats in Hainan province have returned to shore, China Daily quoted the provincial flood control headquarters as saying on Thursday.

Heavy rain and strong gales will hit Guangdong and Hainan with the approach of the typhoon, the report said. The "water authorities" are checking the safety of residents in low-lying coastal areas, it added.
