Godrej Group was established in 1897 with operations in security equipment and vegetable soaps. Godrej Industries, the group's holding company, was founded in 1963 to consolidate its business operations. Today, Godrej operates in over 40 countries, and is India's largest producer of oleochemicals, its products are used in myriad applications including cosmetics, tyres, detergents, pharmaceuticals, cigarettes and toothpaste. The company's "No.1 soap" is one of India's oldest and most recognisable soap brands. In 2022, its subsidiary Godrej Agrovet signed MOUs with three state governments to increase oil palm cultivation by converting paddy fields.
