Dialogue Earth is an independent non-profit dedicated to fact-based, trusted climate journalism. We focus on the impact of climate change on the lives and livelihoods of those most affected by it and create impact by bringing compelling stories from local
voices to our key global audiences.
A UK-registered charity headquartered in London, our approach is rooted in a network of specialist country editors located across South and Southeast Asia, Africa and Latin America, and delivered through reporting in eight languages, workshops, and media partnerships. This global approach builds on two decades of experience reporting on China and deep expertise in the science of climate change, while continuing to broaden the scope and reach of our journalism.
We cover climate, energy, critical minerals, nature, oceans, pollution, water, politics, health, justice and the global economy, through balanced, fact-based, on-the ground reporting.
About the Role:
Dialogue Earth is seeking a Brazil editor to spearhead its coverage of South America’s largest economy. The editor will play a key role in commissioning and editing articles on the most pressing environment and climate issues in Brazil and help formulate editorial strategy. The editor will work closely with Dialogue Earth’s existing Latin America editorial team, a network of freelancers across the continent, and with colleagues in London and across our regional hubs.
The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in reporting and editing, as well as a keen interest in climate and environmental issues, Latin America and international affairs. The Brazil editor will be able to spot a compelling narrative hidden among the headlines and come up with creative ideas for how to tell climate stories that matter to our readers. They will be adaptable; as adept at editing a tightly written news story as they are delivering a long-form feature.
We expect the successful candidate to be well-connected and able to build partnerships with regional newsrooms and journalists. They should have relevant professional experience and excellent writing, editing and verbal communications skills, and a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
Main Responsibilities:
● Writing, researching, commissioning and editing original Latin America content for the Dialogue Earth website and other platforms;
● Managing translation processes and checking translated content to ensure accuracy, consistency and adherence to editorial standards;
● Pitching ideas to the Latin America Editor and Executive Editor, Global Coverage and liaising with other colleagues around the world on themes of mutual interest;
● Developing syndication and content-sharing relationships with regional and international media;
● Building and maintaining a diverse pool of talented freelance journalists to deliver stories and multimedia;
● Working with the wider team, including production, multimedia and social media colleagues, to ensure our work is well presented and amplified to the right audiences.
Essential experience, knowledge and skills:
● Excellent research, writing and editing skills;
● Experience of managing stories and freelance reporters, preparing and developing story briefs, providing feedback and editing first drafts;
● Familiarity with the political, economic and governance contexts shaping environmental and climate issues in Brazil;
● Editorial judgement in commissioning, shaping and editing stories on environmental, climate and development issues, with the ability to identify high-impact angles ranging from timely news and analysis to in-depth and investigative reporting;
● Experience in web publishing, social media and/or digital tools;
● Working fluency in Portuguese and English;
● Strong problem-solving skills and an ability to adapt approach depending on the needs of any particular story;
● Ability to work independently. This work is remote, and requires a significant amount of communication over email and Google Meet, as well as engagement with organisational workflow tools;
● An interest in international affairs and the dynamics shaping current debates around climate change, the energy transition and the environment;
● An understanding of how Chinese trade and investment is impacting Brazil on a geopolitical and environmental level would be an advantage.
