Japan’s Abe to announce climate change plan

Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe plans to unveil a plan to fight global warming as early as Thursday, public broadcaster NHK reported.

Abe, who has made more assertive diplomacy a key policy objective, will propose a new global framework on halving greenhouse-gas emissions from current levels by 2050, NHK said.

Abe has said Japan wants to take the lead in drawing up plans to extend beyond 2012, when the Kyoto protocol expires.
