Hunan paper factories ordered to clean up

More than 800 paper factories in the southern Chinese province of Hunan must improve their environmental standards by the end of the year or face closure, state media reported local environment officials as saying.

The local government had already ordered 234 paper plants around Dongting Lake to suspend operations, Jiang Yimin, director of the Hunan environmental protection bureau, was reported as saying on Saturday.

Now 832 firms will be forced to close or suspend production if they fail to clean up, he added.
