Over-extraction of groundwater leads to environmental damage in northeast China

Groundwater over-extraction has become very severe and will lead to worsening environmental problems in the plain areas south of Beijing and Tianjin, according to research by the Hebei Province Water Resources Exploration Bureau.

By 2030, the shallow part of the water table in the areas is expected to be 16.2 metres lower than the level at the beginning of the century, with the deep part of the water table 39.9 metres lower than it was in 2000.

Water supply to Beijing and Tianjin accounts for most of the extraction of groundwater in the areas, where the use of groundwater accounts for nearly 90% of local water supply.
