Scientists have long known that carbon trapped inside frozen permafrost would release greenhouse gases if thawed, but until now they did not know how much carbon was locked up, the report said.
The team of American researchers, whose study is published in the journal Nature Geoscience, found that the region’s "carbon pool" was 60% bigger than previously estimated.
