China coal mine reporter beaten to death

Police in the city of Datong, Shanxi Province have set up a special task force to hunt down the people who killed a reporter investigating China's accident-prone coal mining industry earlier this month, the Shanghai Daily reported recently.

Mainstream media outlets in the area had avoided reporting on the story, saying they were not sure if the reporter was writing a story about the mine, or simply trying to blackmail its owner.

An online forum first published reports on Saturday that Lan Chengchang, a reporter with the China Trade News, and two of his colleagues were attacked by a mob at an unlicensed coal mine in Datong’s Hunyuan County on January 10, according to a /Nanfang City News/ report yesterday.

Meanwhile, a flood inside an iron mine in northern China’s Inner Mongolia region trapped 28 miners on Wednesday, the official Xinhua news agency said.
