China may halt 21-km concrete dragon project

Work on a 21 kilometre concrete dragon under construction on a Chinese mountain top near a national forest may be halted because of environmental concerns, Xinhua news agency said on Wednesday.
The dragon, originally due to be completed in time for the 60th anniversary of Communist rule in 2009, had been expected to boost the tourism industry in the central province of Henan, but some experts have already branded it a cultural gaffe.
The project was started without necessary environmental assessments," Reuters reported an official as saying at the environmental protection administration in Zhengzhou, capital of Henan.
On Tuesday the administration dispatched experts to the site. If the project fails our assessment, we will order it be stopped or the demolition of the completed part," the state news agency quoted him as saying.
